Model of Lord Burlington's villa at Chiswick

Architectural Model
2001 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a model of Lord Burlington's villa at Chiswick. Lord Burlington built his villa as an extension to his house at Chiswick, near London. Only the villa is shown in this model. It was built for entertaining not for daily living. Burlington based its domed design on two Italian villas of the 1570s, the Villa Rotunda at Vicenza by Andrea Palladio and the Villa Rocca Pisani by Vincenzo Scamozzi. All the details, however, came from ancient classical sources. The interior was richly decorated with painting, gilding and elaborate furnishings.

This model was made by George Rome-Innes and produced by the Network Modelmakers, London, 2001 for the British Galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
