This hat was one of a series of pieces designed by Jorie Johnson of Joi Rae Textiles. While studying in Finland in 1977, Jorie Johnson was introduced to felt-making technique by learning to make traditional Scandanavian felt boots.
She established her Kyoto based textile design studio in the late 1980s. The studio specialises in producing hand-felted woollen fabrics for clothing, accessories, hats, berets, wall-hangings and carpets.
Johnson has written a book 'Felt-making and Wool Magic' detailing the design and techniques of wool felt-making.
