The tray is roughly circular, with side curving outwards and recessed base. The reverse of the tray is black-lacquer and the interior is decorated in orange-red lacquer against which is a design of a folded letter, cherry branches and two gold coins in yellow, green and light black urushi-e. The coins inscribed ichiryo.
