Michael Engelmann worked as a graphic designer mainly in America and Germany. Engelmann's style is characterized by simplified imagery, a surreal wit and an interesting combination of graphic, photographic and photomontage techniques. While he was at the Werkakademie in Kassel, Germany, he taught a whole generation of leading German graphic designers, including Frieder Grindler and Juergen Spohn, whose work from the 1970s is represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
