The PlayStation was named to be the opposite of work station. It was first produced by Sony in 1994 and went on to be the first video games console to sell a hundred million units. Sony ceased production of PlayStation in 2006.
The Sony Corporation was originally called the Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation and was founded just after WWII. In a very unusual move it decided to change its name and chose a word that did not exist in any language. At the time of the change, it was extremely unusual for a Japanese company to use Roman letters instead of kanji characters to spell its name.
