Object history | Gift of W.J. Collins, Devon. Thought to have been a Spitalfields silk worn at the court of Queen Anne by his ancestor, Dame Martha Scawen. The keeper of textiles, A.F. Kendrick dated this piece to the first half of the 18th century and noted that 'in Mr Luther Hooper's opinion, quite possibly the work of French silk weavers settled in England'. Reattributed to France and to the Lyonnais designer Jean Revel by Peter Thornton in 1959. It came into the museum with T.188-1922 (RP1922/6611) |
Bibliographic reference | Thornton, P.K. Baroque and Rococo Silks. Faber and Faber, London, 1965, p. 116 and illustration facing p. 116. |
