Autumn Equinox Floodtide Greatham Creek, Teesmouth, September 1974

Photograph

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Ian Macdonald's photographs of Greatham Creek focus on a community of fishing families that once lived in self-built cabins and boathouses on the north side of the Tees estuary, between Billingham and Hartlepool. This image was taken at a particularly high tide, emphasising a small cluster of fragile shacks on a tiny island. The industrial landscape of Teesside can be seen on the horizon, with Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge on the left and ICI Billingham on the right. The dark clouds gathering above provide a sense of foreboding, and hint at what was coming soon. The shacks and boathouses fell into disrepair and the fishing community had gone by the mid 1980s.
