Place of origin

This is one of six wallpaper samples from The Grange, in Ramsgate, Kent, the house designed by A.W.N. Pugin, the designer and architect, for himself. The house which was built in 1843-4, and the papers were designed around the same time. For the other samples in the V&A colllection see E.3651 to E.3655-2007. This pattern, with heraldic motifs, a black bird from the Pugin arms and and the Pugin motto 'en avant', is the same as E.3652, E.3653, and E.3653-2007. Each of the four papers is in a different colourway.

The V&A has a number of Pugin’s wallpapers and designs, but these are of particular interest because Pugin designed them for his own home, and they were found in situ.
