The computer games' rivalry between Nintendo and Sega saw the latter produce the Mega Drive console in competition with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was released in Japan in 1988 and in Europe in 1990. It hit the North American market in 1989 where it was called Genesis. The Mega Drive was Sega's most successful console, with over 29 million units sold worldwide.

Physical description | Video games console, peripherals and accessories. Black plastic, almost square box shape, with a rectangular cartridge slot set in an oval on its top side. There are two red buttons - Power and Reset. The two controllers are of black plastic, slightly curved rectangular shape. There is a directional button control (D-pad) to the left on the top surface and a trigger on the right with three buttons marked A, B and C. There is a long black electrical cable for attaching the control pad to the console. Black plastic cable for connecting the console to a television screen. There are sockets at either end and a power unit near one end of the cable. Black plastic power cable with a plug in at one end and a mains adaptor plug at the other. Printed paper booklet of 114 pages. Printed in eight languages, with illustration it gives instuctions on the use and care of the games console, Sega Mega Drive II. Printed card giving details of the Sega guarantee and registration on one side and a postal address on the other. |
