Jug of earthenware transfer-printed with red enamel over the glaze, pear-shaped and with a moulded foot and double-curved reeded handle. On the one side is a fop with an attendant shooting his own dog, and with the title 'The MACARONI SPORTSMAN'. On the other side is the fop shown wearing an enormous wig, which is supported on the back of his attendant. Below the rim are festoons of flowers.

Object history | The subjects are taken from a work published by Darly in 1772, entitled 'Darly's Comic Prints, Characters, Caricatures, Macaronies, &c.' and dedicated to actor David Garrick. They are there called 'The Macaroni Sportsman' and 'The Ridicule'. |
