The Rose Garden

Wallpaper
ca. 1895 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The name of the manufacturer, R & Co., is printed in the selvage of this paper. This almost certainly confirms that the paper was made by Rottmann, Strome & Co., which became Rottmann & Co. around 1890. Alexander Rottmann had established a factory in Yokohama, Japan, in the early 1880s to produce Japanese embossed 'leather' papers.
Wallpapers designed to imitate embossed and gilded leather wall-hangings (of the kind originally used in the 17th and early 18th centuries) became popular in the last quarter of the 19th century. Although several British firms - notably Jeffrey & Co. in London - were making such papers, a large proportion were manufacturered in Japan for export to Europe.
