Lidded Cup and Stand
ca. 1908 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The cup and lid are very similar to FE.157-1988 in shape. The saucer has a deep well into which the cup sits, and has an upturned and pinched foliated rim. All three items are painted with a grapevine pattern in underglaze blue of different shades, and highlights are added to the cup and lid by painting the grapes in underglaze copper red. The mark Jiangxi Guohua zhenpin (precious object of Guohua of Jiangxi) within a double circle appears on both the base of the cup and inside the knop of the lid.
Guohua was probably the name of a private ceramic manufactory in Jiangxi which existed side by side with state-sponsored porcelain companies. In view of the close resemblance of the present lidded cup to the preceding vessel, including the tendency of the lid to slip to one side, its date of manufacture should also be about 1908.
