DISH Vilmos Zsolnay (1828-1900) Manufacturer Hungary (Pecs): 1878 Earthenware with painted decoration 711-1878 The Zsolnay factory near Fünfkirchen was founded in 1862. Vilmos Zsolnay took it over from his brother in 1865, at first producing everyday ware in traditional styles. However, his display at the Paris 1878 Exhibition shows that he then widened his scope to include artistic wares in Moorish, Japanese, Persian and Hungarian styles. The Jury praised the quality, variety and technical innovation of Zsolnay's display, noting that he employed only 80 workers. This dish, bought from the exhibition for £1.13.0., is an adaption of a Turkish Isnik pattern of around 1500.
