Hard-paste porcelain painted in enamels and gilt

1496a-1854

From the 1820s the Royal Porcelain Factory at Berlin had faced increasing competition from rivals in Germany and from imports. Under the managers Friedrich Georg Frick (1832-1848) and his successor Kolbe, the factory was modernised and prospered by producing utilitarian porcelain, while continuing to make grand vases and services for royal use. This plate, bought from the Dublin 1853 Exhibition, typifies Berlin exhibition porcelain, painted with a genre scene after the Dutch painter Frans Mieris. Its marks include a Prussian eagle within a band inscribed KOENIGLICHE PORZELLAN MANUFAKTUR.
