Object history
The following reference is from Calloway, S. (1998). Aubrey Beardsley. V & A Publications:

'The five historiated initials completed for Volpone shortly before his death, represented a new, baroque departure in Beardsley's art. Using pencil-work to achieve a robust richness of tone and modelling, these last five drawings completed by the artist only just before he ceased to be able to work remain both as a testament and as a tantalising glimpse of how his work might have developed with more time'.
