Stage designer Andrzej Majewski (b.1936) trained at the Academy of Fine Art in Kraków and on graduating worked at the Polish National Theatre before winning a scholarship to study in Italy. In 1966 he became the principal designer of the Grand Opera House in Warsaw. Salome was his first production in Britain. Majewski's designs are characterised by an emphasis on texture, suggested with thick brush strokes and layers of paint and, in this example, pieces of gold-painted lace.
