The CD began to dominate music sales in the 1990s. It changed how we encounter music as the format requires less handling than an LP. The ritual of putting on a record became less ceremonial, and CD covers had less of a visual impact. The much smaller format pushed designers to think creatively, resulting in innovative CD artwork.
