Coats of arms were standing stock blocks. Stereotype casts were
issued in printers' specimen books from the 1790s onwards and
after the 1830s electrotypes were used. Even in the early specimen
books, coats of arms were offered in a range of different sizes and
styles. Some coats of arms were fine examples of a wood engraver's
skill and often the animals were full of character and vigour. They
were a popular device in advertising to suggest royal approval. |
