Closely related to metalwork shapes, ewers and bottles made in green-glazed stoneware are a favourite ceramic form of the Koryo period, 918-1392. The tiny loops on lid and handle were intended to thread a cord tying the lid to the pot. This ewer is simply painted with brown curved lines, adding surface interest to its lobed shape. Many Korean ceramics were made to imitate natural forms. Here, the resemblance to a melon is clear. The leaf-shaped lid fits neatly.

| Physical description | The ewer is of melon form with a strap handle and is divided by vertical fluted lines into eight lobes. There is a small loop on the handle for threading a cord but the loop is not pierced. The vessel is covered with a celadon glaze, with a scrolling foliage on each alternate lobe painted in underglaze brown slip. Some of the glaze has degraded to a brownish colour. The spout has been broken and restored with small areas of gold lacquer. The circular lid is also lobed with a foliate edge. There is a loop in the centre of the lid which is pierced for threading a cord. |
