Delftware continued to be used for pharmaceutical purposes into the 1800s. Glass or white earthenware with transfer-printed labels finally replaced it. This jar contained a purgative made with various ingredients including cloves.

Drug jar with depictions of a sun-burst, flowers and an inscription, tin-glazed earthenware, painted in blue, probably London, England, ca. 1765-1775
Physical description
One side is painted in blue with a cartouche inscribed E:CARYOCOST. Surmounted by a sun-bust and flowers, with fleshy leaves below.
Body colour: Buff.
Glaze: Bluish white, pooling slightly towards the base and much crazed. Foot-rim wiped entirely clean of glaze.
Shape: Slightly concave on underside. (Alphabetic shape codes as used in appendix to Archer. Delftware. 1997)
