Dish, tin-glazed earthenware, painted decoration of tulip, carnations, budding flowers and leaves grow from a low mound in blue, yellow, ochre and turquoise green. Three stilt marks on the front (7 cms point to point). Buff body colour, shiny lead-glaze with strong greenish areas over a pale slip covers the entire back. Foot-rim has probably partially been wiped clean of glaze.

Object history | Tulips and carnations are not native to Europe, but were introduced from Turkey and the near East. The decoration on this charger also derives from Turkey, and from Iznik ceramics of the sixteenth century, but the design and colouring are much bolder and coarser. |
