Sweetmeat Stand

ca. 1755-1760 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Sweetmeal stand of tin-glazed earthenware, painted. The three cockle-shells and the upper bowl have sprigs of flowers and the birds and shells are dabbed with pigment in yellow, green, blue and manganese-purple.
Body colour: Buff.
Glaze: White and pooling, partially on the underside. Some of the painting has run in the firing and the glaze is very pink where it is thin. Foot-rim wiped partially clean of glaze.
Shape: The shells supporting the birds are hollow as is the central column which has a hole opening into the base. The moulding around the base has numerous stab-holes. The base, central column and wish-bone supports are all decorated with shells and apparently moulded (Alphabetic shape codes as used in appendix to Archer. Delftware. 1997) from real examples.
