The Delivery of Keys to St Peter

Painting
1873 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This watercolour is a copy after Pietro Perugino’s fresco in the chapel Sistine in the Vatican, Rome. It was made by Eliseo Fattorini (1830-1887) for the Arundel Society, established in 1848, to record and promote the work of the Old Masters. The society made a speciality of reproducing in particular the Italian fresco cycles, of which the present work is a fine example. E.232-1995 shows the Delivery of the Keys to St Peter (Matthew, 16: 19), a composition in which it is now commonly thought that Signorelli participated.
