A hand-knotted carpet with a dark brown ground. There are two wavy lines across the lower third of the carpet, each composed of vertical bars 5" high. The lower line is cream, the upper is pink. The upper half of the carpet is decorated with two spirals, a pink one slightly lower, to the right and slightly overlapping a cream one. The spirals are anti-clockwise and each begins from a vertical wavy line coming down fromn the upper edge.

Technique:
Warp: white wool; Z3S; 8 threads per inch (29 per dm).
Weft: dark brown wool; Z3S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 4-5 knots per inch; 17 per dm.
Pile: wool; 3 colours: dark brown, pink, cream; symmetrical knot tied around two threads; 18 knots per inch (272 per sq.dm).
Side and End Finish: Missing. Purple cotton upholstery tape has been sewn and stitched in place as a facing on all four sides.

Attribution note: A similar design was woven for Stateroom number 42 in the 'Queen Mary', the White Star liner decorated and furnished by Trollope and Sons, London. This had only one spiral (pink) but had three wavy lines at the lower end: one of pink vertical stripes, a thick pink line and, above these, a thin pink line. The Wilton design number appears to be 6874.
