This fan leaf, painted with a Chinoiserie design, is probably English in origin. When finished such fans would have been aimed at the cheaper end of the market and probably sold on the street. Since the fan leaf is uncut it is possible to see quite clearly the brush strokes of the wash as it extends beyond the shape of the leaf.

Physical description | Fan leaf painted with a Chinoiserie design. Drawing in pen ink and wash and white highlighting on a double layer of paper showing a Chinese man and woman. The man is fishing and the woman is on the shore. Left and right are plants and flowers, and there are birds in the sky, which is painted in pale blue. Round the edge of the cartouche is a floral pattern like blossom. There is a sailing boat on the water. |
