This fan leaf, painted with a Chinoiserie design, is probably English in origin. When finished such fans would have been aimed at the cheaper end of the market and probably sold on the street. Since the fan leaf is uncut it is possible to see quite clearly the brush strokes of the wash as it extends beyond the shape of the leaf.

Physical description | Fan leaf painted with a Chinoiserie design. Drawing in black ink and wash. Within a cartouche, three Chinese figures in a covered boat with willow overhanging and other waterplants around. Outside the cartouche are randomly arranged winged insects (butterflies?), a branch of blossom, a rug with floral patterns, rock and plant and a random pattern. |
