Design for a rug
British, 1913
Pencil, watercolour and body colour
This is a preliminary design for a rug whic
was shown at the 1913 Daily Mail Ideal Homes
Exhibition, where the Omega Workshops display
took the form of a furnished sitting room. Etchells
only designed for Omega Workshops from January
to October 1913 when he, together with the
painters Wyndham Lewis and Edward Wadsworth,
walked out in protest at the conditions of the
Ideal Homes commission. After a few years as a
painter Etchells trained as an architect and is
now best remembered as the translator of
Le Corbusier's Vers une Architecture.
