Physical description

Sketch-book consisting of sixteen sheets of white wove paper mounted in a volume.
Contents: (1) Stylised portrait of a woman. (2) Stylised portrait of Natal'ia Goncharova. (3) Stylised portrait of a woman in profile. (4) Portrait of a man with whiskers and beard. (5) Portrait of Izdebsky. (6) Stylised portrait of a woman. (7) Portrait of Massine. (8) Caricature of Diaghilev, confronted by a pug dog which is standing on a table. (9) Stylised portrait of a woman. (10) Stylised portrait of man. (11) Portrait of a woman in profile. (12) Sketch of a nude woman standing at a window. (13) Stylised portrait of a woman (variant of (9)). (14) Cubist still-life. (15) Cubist lands-cape with palm tree. (16) Cubist still-life.
All have the same dimensions except (8), which is H 12.2 cm L 21 cm.

Object history note

The inscription on the drawing of Diaghilev 98) allows us to date the whole sketch-book around 1916, when Diaghilev, Massine and Larionov were working on the production of Kikimora at the Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastian.
Purchased from the artist in 1961.
