Designs for children's furniture
Dutch, 1935
Pencil, pen and ink on tracing paper
In response to the worldwide economic
depression of the 1930s Rietveld designed
a range of furniture for Metz & Co called
'Krat' or 'Crate'. These were all made from
low grade timber of a single thickness, such
as might be used for packing cases, and
employed simple screwed joints. The
furniture was packed flat for home assembly.
These pieces contrast with his earlier
designs which were based on a rigorous
aesthetic programme. An example of a
lounge chair from this range is displayed
nearby.
