Place of origin

This was one of the greatest hits among the posters produced during the period of democratic transition in Hungary. It is a typical example of the FIDESZ (Alliance of Young Democrats) electoral campaign in 1990, which was characterised by spontaneity and informality. Small district electoral offices worked independently from the party's headquarters and were open to ideas and help from outside the party. In this case the artist Sándor Kállay, a fan of FIDESZ, simply walked in with the two photographs featured on the poster and suggested the idea.

The first kiss between the Soviet and East German communist leaders Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker is a symbol of the obsolete customs of a proverbially geriatric regime. The second kiss between a young man and woman suggests youth, a more open future and the freedom of the individual.

An important element of party's identity is the the graffitti-like lettering of the name FIDESZ (an Fiatal Demokraták Szövetsége/Alliance of Young Democrats). FIDESZ sounds like the Latin word 'fides' (trust) and the campaign played on this.
