'Let us search together for a solution' is the motto of this election poster distributed during the1990 elections in Romania - the first democratic elections in Romania after the overthrow of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989. It portrays representatives of the Romanian intelligentsia, who came forward as independent candidates for Chamber of Deputies: Mircea Dinescu, Ion Caramitru, Dan Haulica, Andrei Plesu.
Mircea Dinescu (born 1950) is a poet, writer and publicist who is well-known for his anti-totalitarian views and writings. In 1988 his volume of poems 'Death Reading the Newspaper' was banned. After the appearance of an interview in the French daily newspaper 'Libération' in which he criticized Ceausescu's leadership, he was placed under house arrest. Mircea Dinescu played an important role during the Romanian Revolution and in the political life of the 1990s.
Ion Caramitru (born 1942) is an actor and theatre director. He was minister of culture from 1997-2000, and today is director of the Romanian National Theatre. Together with other intellectuals such as Mircea Dinescu, he took part in the occupation of the National Television Centre (TVR) on 22nd of December 1989.
Dan Haulica (born 1932) is an art critic, academic and former UNESCO Ambassador. He was editor in chief of the Romanian cultural magazine 'Secolul XX'.
Andrei Plesu (born 1948) is a writer, essayist and a leading personality in Romanian civil society. He was Minister of Culture1989- 1991, Minister of Foreign Affairs 1997-1999 and a member of The National Council for the Study of the Security Archives in Romania 2000-2004. He is the founder of the Romanian cultural magazine 'Dilema' (now called 'Dilema Veche') and the New Europe College, Bucharest - a cultural institute for advanced studies.
