This handle for a scabbard knife, kozuka in Japanese, is made of shakudo, an alloy of copper and gold, generally patinated to a rich black colour. It is covered in gold engraving depicting three carp and water weed on a nanako ('fish-roe') ground. This effect is produced by a hollow-ended punch.
