This is a reproduction of part of a mosaic, representing the head of the Virgin Mary. The original mosaic is in the apse of the church of Santa Maria in Domnica (or Santa Maria dell Navicella) in Rome. It represents the Virgin seated with the baby Jesus in her lap, adored by angels; at her feet kneels Pope Paschal I (817-824), whose mongram appears above, and by whom the mosaic was ordered to be made.
