In the East German elections the voter was to place a cross by one of the 24 listed parties and alliances contesting the election, andeach 0.25% of the vote would translate into a seat in the Volkskammer, parliamentarians were drawn from party lists in 16 electoral districts. The direct proportional system of representation was adopted into the statute book on 20 February 1990. These were the country's first free multi-party elections, and, with the reunification of Germany on 3 October 1990, also the last.
