Abstraction, porch shadows (Paul Strand)
Strand pointed his camera downward in this photograph to emphasise the curves and rectangles of the subject. This allows the viewer to observe the integration of solid structures and space. Experiments with abstract form in photography like this, especially in Germany and America, introduced a new way of seeing during the first part of the 20th century |
| Production | The film positives were made from enlarged internegatives made by Paul Strand between 1916 and 1917 from his original negatives of 1914-16. The plates were made by Jon Goodman and printed under his supervision at Atelier de Taille Douce, Saint-Preux, Switzerland and at the Photogravure workshop, Millerton, New York, on Lana Gravure paper from the Papeteries de Lana, Docelles, France. |
