    Translation
    Narrow apron. Ribbon always the same colour as the colour of squares on (?). Beads of the middle necklace always the same colour as the ribbons. Apron. White with orange and red according to the drawings. Yellow squares are green and blue. Flowers are of a cornflower colour. Embroidery in green. Design for the hem of the robe. The same one can be applied on the sleeves and on the front of the blouse. Green. yellow. Apron is light red with pink and orange pattern. Belt is darker. Flowers are dark orange. Apron orange with white and green pattern. (?) is green with steel blue . Flowers are light blue and bright red. Bottom of the skirt is always the same as the belt. The belt is of a darker blue.
Object history
This costume design was created for an adaptation for ballet of Mussorgsky's opera based on the story by Gogol. The earliest version with décor and costumes by Goncharova was staged at the Théâtre des Champ-Élysées in 1926. This drawing is for a later production given by the Ballets Russes de Paris at the Salle Pleyel, Paris in August 1940.
Purchased from the artist in 1961.
