Wooden Stand
1870-1900 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This wooden stand has been made to support a glass dome ( M.64:2-1997 ). The fragility of glass domes mean that they do not survive in great numbers and yet were an important element of Victorian decorative schemes. They were used to keep objects dust free in rooms heated by smoky coal and lit by gas. The objects under glass were elevated by the status conveyed by the use of the glass cover.
