Object history | The Granz JATP live showcase (first heard in 1944), has on this 1962 British tour bill, Coleman Hawkins (1904-1969) and Ella Fitzgerald (b.1918) amongst others. |
Historical context | Jazz promoter Norman Granz (b. 1918), employed the talents of Chicago illustrator David Stone Martin to add distinction to some two hundred record sleeves in ten years. Martin's vibrant, blotted-line portraits of jazz people were stylistically akin to those of the influential Ben Shahn (1898-1969) and the approach of both is reflected in Andy Warhol's sleeves for Kenny Burrell (b.1931) on Blue Note, and for Count Basie (1904-1984) on RCA Victor. |
