Cover design showing a man in a raincoat, holding a trumpet behind his back, facing away from the viewer. The programme is illustrated with photographs of various musicians and singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Coleman Hawkins but only one of these is signed : one of Ella Fitgerald on p.8. Lettered with dates and biographies of jazz musicians etc. and signed 'David Stone Martin'.

| Gallery label | Jazz offered a new kind of cool. This concert programme cover shows a jazz musician on the street, standing apart from the crowd. Early Blue Note records are known for their simple palette of black and white with one added colour, their low budgets restricting the design into essential elements only. Photography was combined with lettering to created a modern, pared down visual language, echoing European graphic design trends at the time.(1991) |

| Historical context | Jazz promoter Norman Granz (b. 1918), employed the talents of Chicago illustrator David Stone Martin to add distinction to some two hundred record sleeves in ten years. Martin's vibrant, blotted-line portraits of jazz people were stylistically akin to those of the influential Ben Shahn (1898-1969) and the approach of both is reflected in Andy Warhol's sleeves for Kenny Burrell (b.1931) on Blue Note, and for Count Basie (1904-1984) on RCA Victor. |
