This die was used to make sheet-metal amulets. A thin sheet of metal, such as silver, would have been struck against the die to take its shape. The metal plaque amulet thus produced would have been worn suspended from the neck on a cord or chain.
The subject is the Hindu god Hanuman. He is shown flying through the air to carry back medicinal herbs from the Himalayas to heal the wounded after a battle in an episode from the Ramayana epic. In the original story, however, he carries back the whole mountain top. The cusped arch suggests the form of a shrine or temple.
