Ragamala paintings or ‘garland of ragas’ are visual representation of melodic frameworks and poems. The joys and sorrows of love are the central theme of such paintings. This illustration to the musical mode Madhu Madhavi evokes the mysterious mood of a woman’s journey at night to her lover’s house. The male figure on the top floor is probably the patron of the artist as they are often depicted as onlookers in ragamala paintings. (March 2022)
