Object history
This stage design created for an adaptation for ballet of Mussorgsky's opera based on the story by Gogol. The earliest version with décor and costumes by Goncharova was staged at the Théâtre des Champ-Élysées in 1926. This drawing is for a later production given by the Ballets Russes de Paris at the Salle Pleyel, Paris in August 1940.
Purchased from the artist in 1961.
