Place of origin |
The Shah nama, or Book of Kings, is the epic poem on the ancient kings of Iran, written in Persian and completed by Firdausi in 400AH/1009-10 under the patronage of Mahmud of Ghazni. It was copied in all the Iranian royal ateliers, and copies were often made for rulers across the Persian-speaking world, including the Mughal empire and the sultanates of the Deccan. This page, depicting the hero Rustam rescuing Bizhan from the dungeon, has been detached from a manuscript probably copied in Bijapur, in the Deccan, in about 1610.
