Jar and lid of red earthenware, covered with a white slip, with sgraffito decoration splashed with green under a clear glaze. Bulbous body encircled round the middle by conventional chrysanthemum flowers and foliage on a continuous stem; round the flat base is a border of wave ornament, and on the shoulder and neck are bands of scrolls and leaf-ornament respectively. The domed lid is also decorated with pointed leaves radiating from the round knob.

Object history | Purchased from Mr. Parkenthorpe (79 Ebury Street, S.W.), accessioned in 1910. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project. This class of ware is said by the Japanese to have been made in Shandong province in the Ming dynasty; cf. C.28-191 (Information of Prof. A. H. Sayce, 4/11/192).;; |
