Feininger studied architecture in Germany before becoming a photographer in 1933. Six years later he emigrated to the USA and in 1943 he joined the staff of Life magazine. This image of a helicopter landing, and the mesmerising pattern made by the wing lights, is an example of his experimental approach. Feininger spent many decades exploring the science behind photography, pioneering special effects that are still used by photographers today.
