Figure, in hard-paste porcelain painted in enamels and gilded, of a young goatherd standing and leaning against a stile on a grassy bank and looking down at a kid held under his arms; he wears a wide-brimmed black hat, into the ribbon of which is stuck a clay pipe, a long pale mauve coat over a flowered waistcoat, which is confined by a belt at the waist and left unbuttoned so as to expose a white shirt open at the neck, yellow knee-breeches, white stockings, and brown gaiters over black shoes; a wicker-covered flask rests against the mound at his feet; the base is roughly squared and painted to imitate the ground

Purchased by Lady Charlotte Schreiber from Van Houtum, Amsterdam, for £6 in March 1872.
In her Journals (vol. I, p. 134) Lady Charlotte Schreiber recorded: 'Took a carriage and went straight to Van Houtum's to see what he might have. Great was my delight and surprise on going to his best cupboard, to find a Bristol figure, a youth holding a comb [lamb?], nearly perfect! I was so astonished that I put it down again, hardly believing my own eyes at so great a find. Of course he had not an idea what it was, but because it was large he wanted £7 for it. It ended in our giving him £7 for that and two Bow sauceboats in red camaieu.'
