This tureen, which bears the arms of the Russian Tzarina Anna Ivanova, was originally part of a large service made by the Du Paquier porcelain factory in Vienna. It was presented to the Russian Empress by the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI to cement their military alliance against the invading Turks during the period 1736-39.
The handle on the cover modelled as a miniature Turk is therefore not just a decorative and functional element of the design, but has special political significance at this time.
