Tile Panel

1381-2 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Four convex tiles from the drum of a dome, made of earthenware covered with coloured glazes. As now arranged, the tiles form a section of a two-dimensional arcade design, outlined in yellow (a full arch flanked by two half-arches). The spandrels of the arches have an interlace design in white on a black ground. The arches themselves are filled with arabesque decoration: an arrangement of four large half-palmettes formed from smaller half-palmettes rendered in white and dark-blue glazes is shown against a pattern formed from half-palmettes of the smaller size in turquoise and white, all against a dark-blue ground.

Gallery label
Tiles from a shrine to Rumi Turkey, Konya 1381–2 The poet and mystic Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi died in Konya in central Turkey in 1273. His grave is now part of a large shrine complex. It is prominently marked by a ribbed conical structure sitting on a high drum (far right) and is covered with coloured tiles, which have been renewed several times. These four tiles date from the restoration completed in 1381–2. They were part of a frieze that ran around the drum. Glazed earthenware, with cuerda seca decoration. Note: The label is illustrated with an aerial view of the shrine of Mevlana, which explains the reference to "far right".(2009)
