Object history
The portrait and shield are copied from an engraving by John Faber the younger, published in 1747, and after a painting by Scottish artist Allan Ramsay. The portrait has been modified by the addition of names, in allusion to the capture of Louisbourg in 1758, to the chart held in the admiral's hands.
Purchased by Lady Charlotte Schreiber from Long, London, for £4 4 shillings in April 1878
