Jamb and Lintel
ca. 1500 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

These outside jambs and the lintel of a window made of sandstone were carved in France in c. 1500. The jambs have circular pillars with foliated capitals and hexagonal moulded bases; the outside edges are decorated with a long leafy stem. On the lintel are two blank shields at the corners supported by lions whose tails terminate in serrated foliage in the centre of two pillars. A deeply undercut thistle can be seen in the foliage.

They were possibly for the family of Marlortie (Normandy and Picardy).
